This vase has been turned from a fantastic square of Camphor Burl [Cinnamomum camphora], a truly extraordinary burl wood, coming mainly from Southeast Asia, Vietnam in particular. With a rich, reddish primary color—and others swirling— Camphor Burl is most notable for its amazing figure, rivaling that of even the most impressive burl woods from around the world. It turns extremely well and takes a fine finish, here—after sealing and final sanding—Danish oil is hand-rubbed into the wood. The final step in the finish is the application of a superior mixture of carnauba and beeswax in a gentle solvent. The turning appears lustrous, but without the “depth” of lacquer or other thicker finishes.
