This twig vase has been turned from an especially beautiful piece of Maple Burl. Maple [Acer saccharum (family: Aceracea)] has many different kinds of distinctive figure: "burly," "fiddleback," "curly," "quilted," and spalted are the primary descriptors. Maple Burl is the most dramatic, and most interesting, of the various forms of figure. It also is typically very warm in color. Burls are an outgrowth on a tree, with various causes—but often beautiful variations in the ordinary heartwood. It is much prized by woodturners and woodworkers of all kinds.
