This twig vase has been turned from Camphor Burl [Cinnamomum camphora], a truly extraordinary burl wood, coming mainly from Southeast Asia, Vietnam in particular. With a rich, reddish primary color—and others swirling— Camphor Burl is most notable for its amazing figure, rivaling that of even the most impressive burl woods from around the world.
Sadly, through the imposition of tariffs and a growing scarcity, prices for the wood have increased dramatically, making it one of the most expensive—if beautiful—woods I turn.
The piece was finely sanded and sealed; after sealing, Danish oil was rubbed into the wood, followed by hand-rubbing with a combination of carnauba and beeswax in a light solvent. This finish has what I think is a very light and transparent quality.
