This ickebana has been turned from a beautiful piece of Maple Burl; it includes the pictured water-holding “pin barrel.” Maple [Acer saccharum (family: Aceracea)] has many different kinds of distinctive figure: "burly," "fiddleback," "curly," "quilted," and spalted are the primary descriptors.  Maple Burl is the most dramatic, and most interesting, of the various forms of figure.  Burls are an outgrowth on a tree, with various causes—but often beautiful variations in the ordinary heartwood. It is much prized by woodturners and woodworkers of all kinds.

Small fissure here have been inlaid with Turquoise, giving addition color and character to the turning.

Ickebana translates the Japanese words for "arranging flowers" or "giving life to flowers."
