This bud vase has been turned from spalted maple [Acer negundo (family: Aceracea)]. Spalted wood has particularly dramatic figure by virtue of the organisms that have begun the process of decomposition. That process is of course halted with turning and finishing, but the dramatic, often very dark “spalting lines” remain. The wood is typically very soft and is here stabilized by a collar of Cocobolo, sometimes referred to as the “Queen of the Rosewoods.”
The turning includes a high-quality glass tube, 5 inches in length.
