The bowl seen here was turned from Padauk,[Pterocarpus soauxii (family: Leguminosae)] a particularly fine and colorful turning wood from tropical Africa. Although a rather bright orange when harvested, as seen here, it darkens dramatically—and beautifully—with age and light, becoming a golden brown).
The turning is sealed, finely sand, given a preliminary coat of Danish Oil and a final, hand-rubbed finish of carnauba and beeswax in a fine solvent. The result is a luminous but clear and fully revealing finish.
