This hollow form of Claro Walnut has been suspended between a base and finial of African Blackwood, the darkest of the Rosewood (Dalbergia family), and the premiere detail wood for woodturners. Claro Walnut [Juglansnigra] is a distinctive sub-species of the common Walnut we typically see in furniture. Claro Walnut—of which this is a superb example—is typically much more highly figured, with a beautiful, richly colored wood that works well with other woods and by itself.

The walls of the hollow form have been turned to a very thin dimension. The entire turning was finely sanded and sealed; after sealing, Danish oil was rubbed into the wood, followed by hand rubbing with a combination of carnauba and beeswax in a light solvent. This finish has a very light and transparent quality.
