HOLLOW FORM TURNED FROM ROCK MAPLE BURL

This hollow form has been turned from Rock Maple Burl [Acernegundo (family: Aceracea)], one of the very hardest of North American hardwoods (quite different from other Maples, such as Big Leaf Maple). This, in turn, makes hollowing the form exceedingly challenging, especially in such a rounded form as seen here, with such a small opening to work through (one half inch). But as this turning makes clear, the rewards are extraordinary. Rock Maple, because it is so hard, takes a superb finish--and its burl form offers gorgeous figure.
