This display piece has been turned from a gorgeous piece of Figured Silver Maple [Acer negundo (family: Aceracea)]. It is suspended by a substantia foot of Cocobolo Rosewood, often called the “Queen of the Rosewood” family (Dalbergia). The figure in the Maple is swirling and is accentuated by a feature that is quite extraordinary: chatoyance. Chatoyance is a kind of iridescence, a beautiful optical reflection found in certain gemstones and woods. It is hard to photograph but can be seen in some of its glory here.

The finish is very fine, as the clarity of the wood demands very careful sanding and sealing, and application of a gentle wax finish (carnauba and beeswax in a mild solvent).

The turning may be displayed either horizontally or vertically.
