This bowl, with its distinctive ogee profile, is my tribute to the fabulous English woodturner, Bert Marsh—one of the most influential figures in my own development as a turner. Marsh was the great master of the ogee profile (ogee is a term from medieval cathedral architecture), and I learned from studying his work just how subtle the curve is.
This bowl was turned from a flawless, and quite dramatic, piece of Canarywood, [Centrolobium spp., family Leguminosae]. It is a very beautiful and colorful turning wood from tropical America, Canarywood has a wide range of yellow to red hues (it takes its name from the yellow evident in this bowl. It is an ideal turning wood and takes a great finish.
Technically, this is one of the very most successful pieces I’ve turned over the past 35 years. The ogee profile is precise in proportions; the walls of the bowl are turned to a delicate and consistent thickness; the foot is exactly what is required to lift the bowl; the finish is flawless.
I hope this might have pleased Bert.
