Rock Maple is an unusually hard species of Maple and doesn't often appear in burls. But this (very hard!) Maple blank was perfect for my purposes. The figure is subtle but quite beautiful. Beautiful also is the fixed finial turned from Kingwood Rosewood---one of the most spectacularly colored and figured of the tropical American hardwoods. The two woods complement one another wonderfully.
