This vessel has been turned from Mexican Rosewood (also known as Bocote), a wood that has a remarkably dramatic figure--on full display in this turning. The dark striping is complemented by the African Blackwood, a true rosewood (member of the family Dalbergia). African Blackwood is the premier detail wood for woodturner: it is very heavy and dense, but somewhat oily when turned. This quality makes possible extraordinarily fine cuts, as in the finial seen here.
