Vessel turned from Claro Walnut, with finial of African Blackwood

December 13, 2021

The most beautiful piece of Claro Walnut I’ve ever turned or indeed seen. Figure and color are simply unsurpassable for this wood from Oregon. I am also pleased with the rather ambitious vessel the wood inspired me to turn, including an elaborate finial of African Blackwood, with a bead of California Redwood Burl. The Walnut [Juglans nigra] we are familiar with in furniture and other woodworking is beautiful but nothing like Claro Walnut (of which Claro is a subspecies). One of the finest turnings I’ve ever made.
