Vessel turned from Canarywood, Cocobolo Rosewood, and African Blackwood

September 17, 2022

The vessel seen here has been turned from two tropical American hardwoods, Canarywood (with its bold figure) and Cocobolo Rosewood (sometimes called the "Queen of the Rosewoods"). The finial has been turned from African Blackwood, also a member of the Rosewood family. It is the premier detail wood available to woodturners.

Assembling a vessel of this sort requires extreme precision and equally precise gluing, especially the cyanoacrylate glues. The finish, after sealing, is Danish oil, followed by hand-rubbing of a mixture of beeswax and carnauba in a delicate solvent. This creates a beautiful and fully transparent finish.
