Suspended hollow form turned from Maple Burl and Cocobolo Rosewood

October 23, 2022

I'm always looking for new ways to combine Maple Burl and Cocobolo Rosewood---the one a prized American hardwood for woodturners, the other the "Queen" of the tropical American hardwoods.

The Maple Burl centerpiece is a hollow form, with a pedestal and finial of Cocobolo Rosewood--turned somewhat more broadly than my Africa Blackwood finials. I've done this to reveal more of the figure and beautiful colors of the Cocobolo. In some ways, it might be thought of as a "sculptural" form, with wood replacing marble in the creative process.
