Sculptural form turned from Gold Mallee Burl (Australia)

October 7, 2022

This glorious piece of Gold Mallee Burl (Eucalyptus dumosa) has made the perfect material for the sculptural form seen here. Gold Mallee is a truly gorgeous burl wood from Australia; it is actually from one of the many species of Eucalyptus native to Australia. It has fantastic figure and color, and permits various ways in which to show the amazing natural edge of the burl as it has been cut from the Eucalyptus tree. One of the great turning woods of the world, Gold Mallee Burl is quite expensive and extremely difficult to work, as they it is extraordinarily hard and heavy. But the expense and effort are well worth it! (A photo of the reverse side of a newly cut Mallee burl appears below.)

The sculptural design here has a range of interesting features, and the design seems to me to accentuate the shape of the burl slice.
