Sculptural form turned from Australian Gold Malle Burl, Cocobolo Rosewood, and African Blackwood

November 28, 2020

This sculptural form has been constructed from a particularly thin slice from an Australian Gold Mallee Burl cap, a base of Cocobolo Rosewood to lift the profile, and a finial turned from African Blackwood, with a bead of burl wood in its center, to give the turning focus. These are three of may favorite woods, assembled here in distinctive fashion. Gold Mallee Burl is usually an opportunity for a vessel or sculptural form of its own, but this slice was too think and demanded different treatment. The African Blackwood finial is unusually elaborate for my work, but seems necessary to define this form.
