Maple is Burl [Acer negundo (family: Aceracea)] is an extraordinary turning wood, varying highly in grain qualities, color, spalting (the fungal and bacterial formations that often give burl its distinctive patterning),and degrees of bark and other enclosures. This particular turning square is described by my wood dealer as "exhibition quality." Kingwood Rosewood, from which the finial has been turned is one of the very most beautiful of the tropical American Rosewoods (family Dalbergia).
