Lidded vessel turned from Figured Maple, with Cocobolo Rosewood fixed finial lid

December 18, 2020

Maple, especially in its various figured forms (including burl), is a quintessential American turning wood. By contrast, Cocobolo Rosewood (sometimes called the "Queen of the Rosewoods" [family Dalbergia]) is an intensely dramatic tropical American hardwood, both in color and figure. It is a hard, dense wood that is ideal for finial turning. I usually turn woods other than African Blackwood in greater diameters to give the grain a greater chance to be revealed; that's the case with the (fixed) finial here.
