Hollowed vessel turned from Claro Walnut, with African Blackwood finial

March 7, 2023

This vessel has been turned from a gorgeous piece of Claro Walnut, a distinctive sub-species of the common Walnut [Juglans nigra] we typically see in furniture. Claro Walnut is typically much more highly figured, with a beautiful, rich color that works well with other woods and by itself. Here it is crowned by a finely detailed finial of African Blackwood, the premier detail wood available to woodturners. It is extremely heavy and dense, with an oily texture that makes extremely fine cuts possible on the lather.
