Enclosed form turned from Claro Walnut (Oregon)
March 4, 2021
This enclosed form has been turned from a beautiful piece of Claro Walnut from Oregon. Claro Walnut is a distinct sub-species of the Walnut familiar from furniture/furniture making. It typically has a much greater range of color and figure. It is a fine turning wood, but requires patience in drying, as it normally arrives recently cut and completely wet. I rough turn the piece, leaving enough thickness for subsequent movement of the wood during drying, which I try to slow down by putting a heavy sealer on it. I microwave the piece periodically during the drying process to accelerate, slowly, things. Finish sanding and actual finishing are particularly challenging with this wood.
